Cross-Fade: Double Gradient Projects

Cross-Fade: Double Gradient Projects

We're often asked what to make with a Gradient Set -- but more spectacularly, what can you make with two of them? Several designers have created patterns that let the changing tones and shades of two Gradient Sets play off one another for stunning results. Here are a few of our favorite double gradient yarn knitting project ideas.

Sincerely Yours Wrap by Marilyn Woodruff in Denim and Flamingos is a rectangular wrap featuring biased waves of lace.

Denpa by Olga Buraya-Kefelian in Ursa Major and Taurus: Inspired by traditional old shale patterning, this shawl explores dimensional textured waves paired with the 2 complementary gradient palettes. The wrap is completely reversible.

Gradients à Deux by Debra Gerhard in Espresso and Sea Teal is worked from the center out, in-the-round to create the eye-catching center panel. Increases and decreases on each wing create a zigzag pattern which accents the beautiful gradients’ color progressions and produces an unusual edging on the ends.

Let Inara Wrap by Ambah O'Brien be the blank slate on which you paint your own personality. Select two sets of gradient yarns for a rich ombre, or mix and and match from your stash for a roadmap of your favorite tones. Diagonal columns of alternating lace and garter stitch make a strong statement without being intimidating.

Super Asymmetry by Mary Annarella in Sea Teal and Beachcomber is constructed from knit triangles that are gradually joined to one another to form a rectangular shawl. Here, asymmetric patterns emerge from symmetric forces to create a pleasing result.

Ubergang by Katrin Schubert in Carina and Adobe breaks the mold of contrasting light against dark, instead keeping the light shades of two gradients together and the dark shades together all in a brioche pattern designed to let each colorway shine in turn.

Other Gradient pairings we love include:
Echo & Ivy
Amber & Vineyard
Espresso & Pleiades
Bougainvillea & Herb Garden
Adobe & Carina
Citrus & Perseus
Cassiopeia & Death by Chocolate

Finally, these patterns weren't originally designed for two gradient sets, but they'll work - play with your colors and see what arrangement will be most pleasing!

The Crown Wools by Casapinka

The Great British Baking Shawl by Mary Annarella

Sequence Fade by Elizabeth Beach

With two gradient sets, you can create truly unique and eye-catching pieces that showcase your knitting skills. Experiment with different gradient yarn color combinations to discover the most stunning results - and be sure to share your finished projects with us! We love to see what you create.
